Gayla Designs is a collection of original encaustic paintings, prints, artwear, & accessories designed by Alaskan born artist, Gayla Ranf.
“I find freedom in creating encaustic art—to experiment, to innovate, to explore the boundaries of what art can be. It’s a constant journey of experimentation and discovery, where the process is as enriching as the finished piece.”
Since my encaustic painting experience spans 15+ years, I never tire from the beauty, colors and boldness from this medium. Born and raised in Alaska, i have come to realize what a magical place it is and how it has inspired much of my work.
We’ve all heard how important being in the present moment truly is. Well, it definitely applies to my creating process. Working with molten wax and heat requires a lot of focus, it’s very easy to just lose yourself while combining color and texture. That’s when a piece comes to life and am often in awe of the happy accidents that result in a true piece of art.
As I dip my brush into the wax, I am drawn into a world where layers tell stories and imperfections become beauty marks. Each stroke is a conversation between heat and pigment, a delicate balance of control and surrender.
The process from start to finish challenges me to remain skillfully contained while completely letting go of any creative outcomes. In this way, encaustic art making reflects the fluidity of life itself. Letting go of expectations is a life practice most people can relate to. My art is the result of my continued practice with this lesson. I look forward to sharing my insights, process, and creations with you!
When I am not creating, selling, or teaching encaustic art at Spenard Art Studio in Anchorage, you will find me hiking, walking, enjoying connections with friends and family.
